The mass spectrometry service has four main spectrometers

Bruker Reflex III

The Reflex III is a Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation, Time of Flight instrument (MALDI-ToF) used to analyse involatile molecules in the mass range 200 to 200 000 Daltons.

Bruker Reflex III

VG AutoSpec

The Autospec is a magnetic sector instrument that can analyse molecules in the following ionisation experiments.

  • Electron Ionisation (EI) - For volatile molecules in the mass range 2 to 900 Daltons
  • Chemical Ionisation (CI) - For volatile and unstable (to EI) molecules in the mass range 2 to 900 Daltons
  • Liquid Secondary Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (LSIMS) - For involatile molecules in the mass range 105 to 5000 Daltons

Waters LCT

The LCT is a Time of Flight (TOF) instrument that can analyse molecules in the following ionisation experiments.

  • Electrospray Ionisation (ES) - For polar molecules in the mass range 100 to 3000 Daltons
  • Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation (APCI) - For non-polar molecules in the mass range 100 to 3000 Daltons

Perkin Elmer Turbomass

The Turbomass instrument is a dedicated gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS) fitted with an autosampler that can operate in both EI and CI modes. It is used to analyse mixtures of volatile molecules.
