Instrumentation

The ICP Spectrometry laboratory, sited in laboratory B11, has three main spectrometers

  • Spectro Ciros Vision ICP-ES
  • Agilent 4500 ICP-MS
  • Agilent 7500 ICP-MS (with collision cell)

Spectro Ciros Vision ICP-ES

Allows the simultaneous analysis of most (70+) elements in the periodic table with detection limits in the high ppt to low ppb range.

Agilent 4500 and 7500* ICP-MS

Allows the simultaneous analysis of most (70+) elements in the periodic table with detection limits in ith very low to high ppt range.

*This instrument has a collision cell which removes many interferences associated with conventional ICP-MS instruments.

Sample Preparation

Samples are usually introduced to the instruments in liquid form, so liquids containing undissolved matter and solid samples are digested in various acids prior to analysis. However solid samples which are difficult to digest (glass, refractive materials and some metal oxides) can be analysed by a laser ablation (New Wave UP-266 Macro) - the solid sample is ablated by the laser and the aerosol passed directly into the plasma. This technique can be used to give spatial information (resolution down to 10 microns) for example in tissue samples or metal castings. The laser ablation system can be attached to any of the three instruments.
