Chromatography service details

General Introduction

The chromatography service is sited in lab C43 and comprises three sections:

High Performance Liquid Chromatography

The instrumentation consists of two Waters 2690 series, two Varian Prostar series and two Gilson HPLC’s, all with UV-Visible detectors.

Analysis can be qualitative using reference materials or quantitative using internal or external standards and there is a wide variety of stationary phases including chiral columns.

Routine analysis requires a minimum of 2mg’s of sample whilst preparative HPLC enables up to several grams of material to be purified.

Varian Prostar

Gas Chromatography

Instrumentation consists of three Perkin-Elmer Autosystem XL GC’s, one of which has a gas sampling valve and thermal conductivity detector for gas analysis. Analysis can again be qualitative or quantitative using a wide range of stationary phases including chiral columns. A minimum of 2mg’s of sample is required.

Gel Permeation Chromatography

Instrumentation is a Hewlet-Packard 1090 HPLC with UV-Visible and differential refractive index detectors.

Comparative molecular weight averages (from 500 to 2 000 000) may be determined using a range of columns, calibrated using polystyrene standards. A minimum of 10mg’s of sample is required.
